Neighborhood Walking Audit
The Historic Northeast-Midtown Association and the Health Council of Wyandotte County are trying to work with neighborhoods to conduct "walking audits" in eastern Wyandotte county. The goal is to identify and prioritize the need for street improvements, sidewalks, curb repair and street lighting, in order to provide communities and neighborhoods, specifically children and families, safe places to walk and make neighborhoods more pedestrian friendly, thereby helping to increase access to resources for residents.
Our neighborhood has decided to raise funds through individual contributions to fund this walking audit in Westheight. The estimated cost of performing the audit is $2400 which includes hiring staff from KU school of architecture to produce maps and data analytics in a detailed report that will be used to present to the UG. The overall project is called In our Own Back Yard (IOBY) and through a partnership with Wyandotte Health and the HNMA we as a neighborhood will be advocating and exploring additional resources to work with the UG to resolve the issues identified in our walking audit.
Long story short, this will be a very important first step in getting sidewalks in Westheight as well as curb and lampposts repairs.
Our goal as a neighborhood is to raise $1200 which will be matched dollar for dollar to fund the walking audit. We will engage students from Northeast Middle, Mark Twain, Wyandotte High School, and surrounding neighborhoods to participate not only in conducting the audit but also in advocating to get the work done.
