HOME REPAIR REMINDER
As the weather has warmed many neighbors have begun work on some of those home improvement projects on one's to-do-list. If you plan to paint your home, replace your roof, or do any other updates to the exterior of you home, it is important to remember our responsibility to our Historic Status.
Our beautiful neighborhood, Westheight Manor, has long been recognized as one of the most historically significant in all of the Kansas City area, due to the large number of architecturally significant structures in Westheight. Between 1975 and 1982 all of the houses in Westheight became included in the the State and National Registers of Historic Places. This significant honor was accorded to Westheight because of the overall character of the neighborhood and the beauty and quality of the structures therein.
It is critical that any work done to the exterior public-facing portion of your house be completed in a manner that maintains its historical integrity, per our local ordinances regarding National and State registered properties. This means if you repair or replace your roof, siding or windows, the replacement must be in the same style that was original to the house. These types of construction done to the exterior of a home in Westheight require a building permit. You can check with the UG's Planning Department staff (913-573-5750) who will be eager to help you walk through everything, including any requirement to submit your application to the local Landmarks Commission.
Remember, your rehabilitation costs may be eligible for state income tax credits as well.
